Most luxury travel writing is produced by people with a structural incentive to be impressed. The reviews here will tell you when something isn’t worth the money, when a property’s marketing oversells the object, and when the honest answer is that you should book somewhere else.
Every review states at the top how the visit was paid for — in full at public rates, hosted, or sponsored — in plain language, whether or not it affected the verdict. Nearly everything published here so far was paid for in full. Where it isn’t, it says so, and it says what it would have cost. No host or sponsor sees a review before it publishes, and none has any say over the verdict. The details are in our editorial standards.
Every review also states when the visit happened and when the information was last re-checked. Travel writing goes stale — rates move, chefs leave, programs change — and pretending otherwise is how readers end up booking something that no longer exists.
About the byline
Jay Benjamin is a pen name. The reviews, the trips, the prices paid, and the opinions are real; the name on them is not the writer’s legal one. That seemed worth saying plainly on a site whose entire premise is telling you the truth about expensive things.
